This paper analyzes the spatial distribution of proton fluxes with energies in excess of 90 MeV at heights of 700 to 1000 km during an event in which a prolonged north-south asymmetry at energies of 5 to 90 MeV was detected in high-latitude regions of the geomagnetosphere. Characteristics of the north-south asymmetry are compared with those of an observed morning-evening asymmetry in solar-cosmic-ray fluxes in the auroral oval. It is found that during the event studied, geomagnetic disturbances varied slightly and the polar boundary of the evening auroral region shifted from 65 to 71 deg invariant latitude. Satellite data are examined which indicate that the behavior of the auroral-region boundary and the auroral-oval maximum were governed by magnetospheric dynamics.
