Quantitative models of the geomagnetosphere are reviewed, and expressions are presented which permit calculation of the magnetic field in the geomagnetosphere for a variant of the parabolic model. It is shown that the intensification of the magnetotail current system characterizes the change of the magnetospheric configurations which is characteristic of the preparatory phase of the magnetospheric substorm. Calculations are presented which illustrate the effects caused by inclination of the geomagnetic dipole to the earth-sun line. Model calculations are compared with measurements of the magnetism.
