The arguments of Vaisberg et al. (1974, 1975) and Russell (1978), who reject the possibility of an intrinsic Martian magnetic field, are examined, and data from Mars 2 and Mars 3 are used to support the earlier statement (Dolginov et al., 1972, 1973) that there is an intrinsic Martian magnetic field. The determination of the magnetic moment of Mars is explained, and computed and real values of the 'obstacle' heights on the dayside of Mars are provided. It is stated that obstacle heights calculated by Bogdanov (1975) are not in accord with data on the dynamic pressure and Kp-index and that the 'mean obstacle's height' value of 450 km was obtained by an incorrect treatment of the data. The other researchers interpret the value of 450 km as an indication that an interplanetary, rather than a Martian, field was detected.
