Nineteen laboratories, of nine countries, have reported independent determinations of the oxygen and carbon isotopic composition of the TKL-1 and K-2 calcite reference samples. Results for the individual samples demonstrate a need to replace exhausted primary reference standards and to adopt precise values for constants such as CO 2 - H 2 O 25° C . The reported differences in 18 O between the two samples vary between 23.0 and 23.6%., reflecting mass spectrometer errors that are approximately proportional to measured differences in isotopic composition. In order to eliminate such errors, isotopic reference scales should be based on at least two primary standards.
