The review is concerned with the formation of elements in stars and the subsequent evolution of these elements. It is thought that only hydrogen and helium were created during the big bang and that all the heavier elements were subsequently synthesized by nuclear reactions in stars, in interstellar medium, and possibly in 'little bangs' in the nuclei of galaxies. Also discussed are the enrichment of the composition of interstellar medium and the composition of the solar system. The use of abundance distribution data for elucidating the evolution of the solar system, stars, and the galaxy is considered.
