Multichannel scans of the energy distribution of three regions 1' from the nucleus of NGC 5128 are described. Two regions lie outside the central dust lane and a third is in it. The stellar energy distribution corresponds very closely to that of a 'standard' giant elliptical galaxy. A reddening law is derived for the matter in the dust lane and found to be similar to that in Perseus. Characteristics of the dust lane are discussed. It is proposed that the dust lane originated in the nucleus of NGC 5128 at an epoch of major nuclear activity some 5 million years ago; its production involved energies comparable to that radiated nonthermally by the galaxy.
