The Hubble morphological galaxy classification, as modified and extended by de Vaucouleurs, contains two galaxy subclasses with ring structures. Galaxies of one subclass have a round or beamlike nucleus which is surrounded by an interior ring with a distinct appearance. The second subclass contains galaxies with ring structures which can be observed as exterior envelopes in the case of lens-shaped systems and early-type spirals. The galaxies of both subclasses have a central nucleus. On the basis of their photographic image, the ring galaxies can be divided into three groups. Companion galaxies can usually be found in the immediate vicinity of the ring galaxies. Attention is given to details of galaxy structure, the companion galaxies, photometric studies and mass determination, and a theoretical evaluation of the nature of ring galaxies.
