The Space Telescope (ST) has been designed for a launch on the Space Shuttle in 1983. The advantage of a space location for a telescope are related to transparency in the ultraviolet and infrared and the sharp imagery possible at all wavelengths. The ST has been planned as a general-purpose instrument, equipped with a large mirror for concentrating photons at optical wavelengths and with a variety of instruments that can be used for imaging at different wavelengths, for photometry and spectrophotometry, and for precise determination of apparent positions in the sky. Of the six instruments planned for the initial period of the ST, two are cameras designed for imagery over a wide range of wavelengths, including the visible ultraviolet, and near-infrared. One of the programs of study which are to be conducted is concerned with the distance scale of the universe. Investigations which are to be carried out with the two spectrographs of the ST are also discussed. A fascinating program in which the astrometer of the ST is to be employed is the measurement of low-mass components of nearby stars. The optical polarization of stars in the ultraviolet is to be measured with the aid of a high-speed photometer.
