Observations at Arecibo of the 839.4 MHz absorption line in the spectrum of 3C 286 have failed to detect any structure within the profile. A simple intervening-galaxy model is consistent with both the present data and recent VLBI results. The redshift measurement is inherently of very high accuracy; application of this type of observation to the direct measurement of cosmological deceleration appears feasible on a time scale of decades.
