A 200-day Ariel 5 observation of the X-ray source 3U 1223-62 is presented. Variations in the phase of the 11.6-min pulse period have been studied. It is shown that the data are consistent with 3U 1223-62 being part of a 41-day binary system. Intrinsic increases and decreases in the pulse period of 0.5 s on a time scale of a month were also seen. The amplitude of the pulse profile was found to be greater at higher energies. The source exhibited marked and complex variations in intensity, including a 1-min burst of flux which peaked at the intensity of the Crab.
