A preliminary color-magnitude diagram for the star cluster NGC 6256 has been constructed from three yellow and three blue plates in order to determine the nature of the cluster. Sixty-eight stars were measured with an iris photometer and calibrated relative to eight stars from Bernard's (1976) photoelectric sequence. It is suggested that most of the plotted stars falling within the (B-V) range from 1.4 to 2.6 mag constitute the giant branch of a globular cluster. A mean reddening of 0.63 plus or - 0.13 mag is estimated, implying distances of 8 kpc from the sun and 2 kpc from the galactic center.
