The Thiele-Innes method of calculating the orbits of visual binaries has the disadvantage of being applicable only in the case of an elliptic trajectory and also the disadvantage that the orbital elements become infinite as the eccentricity approaches unity. This paper describes a method similar in principle to the Thiele-Innes method, but valid for all values of the eccentricity. An example of the use of the method is given by calculating the orbit of 19545 S 3852.
