Some theoretically simulated radio maps of giant H II regions are presented and discussed. It is found that there are not only cases in which a straightforward analysis of continuum maps may be sufficient, but also others where additional information is absolutely necessary in order to determine the actual geometric configuration of a radio complex. Qualitative arguments are used to generalize the results to the case of optical and IR maps. A simple analytical model is provided which clarifies the various aspects of the problem and permits one to predict easily the gross properties of a group of sources or to obtain reasonable estimates of the number and density of sources from observations of a complex region. The theory is applied to demonstrate that the apparent structure consisting of small compact components in Sgr B2 may be the result of projection effects. It is noted, however, that a model consisting of many independent H II regions embedded in a dense molecular cloud can best explain both radio continuum observations and IR, submillimeter, and molecular-line results.
