Recent work on supernova remnants (SNRs) is reviewed, emphasizing nonequilibrium processes in young SNRs, the effects of supernovae on the nature of the interstellar medium, and mechanisms for relativistic-particle acceleration. Several types of young SNR are distinguished, and shock-driven optical emission is discussed. Modification of SNR evolution by the interaction of the blast wave with the interstellar medium is examined. Particle-acceleration processes in shock waves and the existence of a hot interstellar gas are considered. Cooling and heating of hot interstellar gas by type I supernovae is investigated.
