The UBV, RGU, and uvby multicolor photometric systems are evaluated as part of a systematic investigation of the capacities and limitations of color photometry. Synthetic colors and reddening parameters are computed for the three systems from their response functions and from a sample of observed stellar energy distributions representing the principal spectral types and luminosity classes. Effects of the position and bandwidth of the response functions on the synthetic UBV and RGU colors are studied, and a representation of the U passband for the UBV system is proposed in order to account for the nonlinearities existing in the transformations of the synthetic colors to the mean observational system. The intrinsic classification capacities of the three systems are compared in terms of a principal component analysis. The synthetic UBV and RGU colors are then used to improve the transformation equations between the two systems. The improved equations account for effects of interstellar reddening, including the variations of the reddening parameters of the two systems due to different degrees of reddening and the intrinsic colors of stars.
