An attempt is made to report on a theoretical study of the dynamical evolution of elliptical protogalaxies represented as Maclaurin spheroids. Damping of finite-amplitude oscillations is analyzed by integrating the second-order ordinary differential equations for the semimajor and semiminor axes. Numerical results are presented which indicate that pseudoperiods of polar oscillations are smaller than the corresponding pseudoperiods of equatorial oscillations, that damping occurs after a few oscillations, and that ellipticity is not a monotonically increasing function of angular momentum. A comparison with predictions from the virial theorem shows that the results of this study are in agreement with that theorem.
