Excitation processes that can lead to inversion of the main lines of the OH ground state are discussed. Due to the frequency dependence of the emission coefficient of dust, far-IR emitted by warm enough dust can excite the upper halves of the Lambda-doublets of rotational levels more strongly than the lower halves. The cascade back to the ground state will then invert the main lines. It is shown that this mechanism can explain rather well the main-line emission from OH/IR stars.
