A model is proposed for the evolution of S0 galaxies. It consists of a build-up of intergalactic matter via the collisions of galaxies. This is followed by the stripping of galaxies by intergalactic gas so that they remain free from gas. The model is based on star-formation and gas-loss time scales. The model may be used to predict (1) the mass of intergalactic gas, (2) abundances of heavy elements in the intergalactic gas, and (3) abundances of deuterium and secondary nucleosynthesis isotopes in intergalactic matter.
