To link models of the cometary nucleus with the phenomena of the development of the coma, surface physico-chemical phenomena which liberate gases are analyzed quantitatively. The entropy and enthalpy variations of their changes of state are treated with an equation expressing the gross energy balance. The major requirement of this equation is that it be easily computable numerically for nearly any model. The equation takes into account the variations of the latent heats with temperature. This equation is then applied to models obtained by assuming the simplest possible hypothesis on a constitution of the nucleus which takes cosmic data into account. Starting from cosmic abundances, it is shown via which mechanism free methane is lost from nucleus. The major remaining constituents are hydrates of methane and ammonia (85 percent) around meteoric fragments (15 percent).
