The paper gives a general description of the scientific instruments on board the joint British-American Astronomical Satellite intended for spectroscopic measurements of a large number of astronomical objects with emission spectra in the range 115-320 nm. The spectrometer, designed for two resolution capabilities of 0.01 nm and 0.6 nm, the telescope and its control system, the electronic circuitry of the spectrometer chamber, and in particular, a new type of camera tube sensitive to UV, are described. Some measurement results obtained for a UV photocathode and a combination of an image converter and SEC vidicon are presented, giving a comparison of the two systems with respect to quantum efficiency, transfer characteristics of the storage plates, resolution, background, and image geometry.
