The historical development of large optical telescopes is reviewed, and an attempt is made to trace the planning and actual construction of the Soviet 6-m (236-in.) large altazimuth telescope. Emphasis is placed on the ways in which different components and materials for this telescope were ultimately selected and the various problems encountered in designing the instrument. The trispherical system of telescope axes is described, and systematic errors are identified.
