It was suggested (Baldwin et al., 1978, Nature, 273, 341) that the Mg II 2800 Ang. emission line might prove to be a useful indicator of QSO luminosities for low-redshift quasars. An optical survey of a complete sample of flat-spectrum radio quasars shows that there is a strong inverse correlation between the equivalent width of the Mg II line and the luminosity of the continuum near Mg II. However, there appears to be more scatter in the EW(MgII) ? L(continuum) plot that in the similar plot for C IV 1549. A few Mg II 2800 measurements are very discordant from the mean relationship. By measuring both Mg II 2800 and C IV 1549 line strengths it is possible to tie the zero point of the Mg II 2800 calibration to that of C IV 1549. A broad bump in the continuum near Mg 2800 that has been noted by other workers is also present in our data.
