The significance of the Viking Mars mission as a test at the planetary level of the Gaia hypothesis, in which the lower atmosphere of the earth is regarded as an integral, regulated, and necessary part of life itself, is examined. Possible biological mechanisms for the control of temperature, pH, and oxidation states in the earth's atmosphere are discussed. It is argued that the atmosphere of Mars should have developed anomalies in temperature, composition, or pH if life is present. A failure of Viking to detect evidence of life could be regarded as supporting the Gaia hypothesis, since present knowledge of the Martian atmosphere indicates a complete absence of such anomalies
