Arguments for and against a capture origin of the moon are briefly summarized. A capture origin involving energy dissipation by a resisting medium surrounding earth is considered, and pre-capture orbits are obtained for three possible earth satellites using the circular restricted three-body problem. The results indicate that if the mass of the earth never greatly exceeded its present value, the moon should have been formed somewhere in a band between 0.95 and 1.05 AU from the sun with an eccentricity of 0.04 and an inclination of 0.6 deg. It is concluded that if the moon was indeed captured by earth, it was formed in the vicinity of earth's orbit and should have been captured within several hundred million years after formation.
