The paper discusses four different cases of multiple balloon recordings of auroral zone bremsstrahlung X-rays, supplemented with riometer data, to study the pattern of energetic (with an energy not less than 30 keV) electron precipitation during the growth phase of substorms. The following conclusions were drawn from the observations: (1) prebay precipitation appears first north of the auroral zone and progresses gradually towards lower L-values; (2) the region of high-energy electron precipitation is normally narrower in latitude (on the order of 50 km), whereas it may extend for at least 2000 km in the east-west direction; (3) at high L-values, the precipitation ends well before bay onset; (4) the energy spectrum during the growth phase appears to be harder during the subsequent bay-associated precipitation; (5) a weak ionospheric current system seems to be associated with the region of prebay precipitation, participating in its southward motion; and (6) prebay precipitation occurs during periods of southward interplanetary magnetic field and increasing magnetotail field.
