The differentiation behavior of the Taylor-Jakes (1974) model of the bulk lunar composition (8.2% Al2O3, 6.6% CaO) is studied using the techniques of experimental petrology, and a substantial amount of data are obtained on other models. The way in which a model moon with this composition would crystallize and differentiate under conditions of total melting throughout and total melting of only an outer shell a few hundred kilometers thick is evaluated quantitatively. It is shown that for both cases, partial melting of the ferromagnesian cumulates underlying the crust would produce magmas with compositions markedly different from those of mare basalts. The most promising model is found to be one in which substantially smaller abundances of involatile components are present, only an outer shell melted and differentiated about 4.6 billion years ago, continued radioactive heating of the deep undifferentiated interior provided a second generation of primitive magmas up to 1.5 billion years after the earlier process, and these magmas participated in assimilative interactions with late-stage differentiates formed near the crust-mantle boundary during the 4.6-billion-year process.
