The three mirror design form for telescope considered is capable of an unusually high degree of correction because there are eight degrees of freedom available to the designer. Equations are developed which yield the curvatures, conic constants, and separations of the optical elements in a sign convention suitable for use with many of the optical design computer programs in use today. An equation is developed whose factors allow a system to be designed having a specified Petzval curvature through modification of one of the fundamental input parameters. A procedure is described which may be used to optimize the performance of the design by varying only the fundamental input parameters. A picture is provided of a sky survey telescope which is a three-mirror flat field system having an aperture of 1.5 meters, a focal ratio of f/3.0, a field of view of 2.0 degrees, and a central obscuration of 0.5.
