The paper examines some of theoretical problems raised by strong double radio sources and discusses some of the more promising lines of interpretation in the light of present data. Most theorists now suspect that power is somehow being injected continuously into the source components. Two very different kinds of continuous flow models have been proposed: (1) the radio components themselves contain massive self-gravitating bodies flung out from the galactic nucleus, and (2) energy and momentum are supplied continuously by two beams of hot plasma squirting out of the nucleus in antiparallel directions. The basic ingredients of these types of models are considered, and evidence for one or the other type is reviewed.
