A diffusion equation is derived which is compatible with equilibrium to a high degree of accuracy throughout all practical astrophysical situations. The equation takes into account abundance and ionization effects as well as the redistribution of the atomic radiative force on a given element among all its ionization states. Partial ionization is treated in detail, and a term is added to allow for the appearance and disappearance of particles from a given state of ionization. Thermal diffusion is shown not to be very important in the atmospheric models employed.
