In the present paper, mathematical models are proposed for gas and particle flows from cool luminous stars. In these models, the radiative and dynamic interactions of gas and particles are taken explicitly into account, so that the density and temperature structures of the models derive from the modeling process rather than input parameters. It is found that mass flows in which the particles have the optical characteristics of clean silicate material do not, in general, have energy distributions with conspicuous 10-micron excesses. On the other hand, flows with dirty silicate particles are warm and generally display conspicuous 10-micron excesses. Also, strong 2.7-micron water vapor absorption may be diagnostic of stars with relatively large luminosities and mass loss rates.
