Positions relative to the cluster center are reported for eight variable stars in the globular cluster NGC 5986. Blue magnitudes are measured or estimated for nine variables, and periods as well as other light-curve characteristics are determined for the same nine stars. Light curves are presented for these nine variables; it is shown that two of them are of type RRc, that the light curves of the remaining stars are characteristic of type RRab, and that all the stars are cluster members except for one RRc variable (a foreground object). An apparent visual distance modulus of 15.7 mag is derived for NGC 5986. An attempt to assign NGC 5986 to one or the other Oosterhoff group reveals that the cluster is apparently one of the 'misfits' that are poor in RRc variables but have mean RRab periods in excess of 0.6 day.
