An optical array consisting of nine large boule (spherically mounted) telescopes, which are mechanically feasible and economical up to mirror diameters of 5 m and focal ratios of 2.0 or less, would provide a telescope of 15 m-equivalent aperture for all astronomical purposes; this would even extent to direct imaging by currently available aperture synthesis methods. Resolving power in the interferometric mode would equal that obtained by the VLBA at radio wavelengths. Attention is presently given to the mechanical and optical design features of an individual, 5-m aperture boule telescope, emphasizing the weight minimization potential of the spherical outer shell. A comparison is made with a conventional 5-m design and a 15 m-equivalent aperture array of alternative design. An order of magnitude cost reduction is foreseen for the boule design, by comparison to the conventional.
