The Japanese 3-m aperture, altazimuth-mount telescope features a honeycomb primary mirror structure and short (f/2) focal length. This largely conventional telescope design is intended to be a stepping stone to larger and technologically more ambitious telescope projects, allowing designers and manufacturers to familiarize themselves with the range of performance and fabrication criteria.
