Discoveries and operational features of the IRAS satellite are reviewed. The cryogenically cooled IR viewing instrument was programmed to scan the entire sky in the 12, 25, 60, and 100 micron bands, aimed always at directions perpendicular to the sun. At least 200,000 IR point sources have been surveyed, and the Comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock was revealed, together with four other 17th magnitude objects. The 16th magnitude body, 1983 TB, has been identified as the parent of the December Geminid meteor shower. A dust ring has been found in the solar system at about 4 AU from the sun, and is judged to be the source of zodiacal light. Cirrus cloud-like carbon molecule agglomerations have been detected more than 1000 AU from earth. Solid matter was accidentally observed orbiting the star Vega, and 50 other stars were identified as candidates for possessing similar clouds.
