The sensitivity of the spectroscopic and polarimetric properties of magnetic white dwarfs to field geometry is investigated using uniform, dipole, quadrupole, octupole and two offset dipole models. The results suggest that often it may be difficult to distinguish between an offset dipole and a combination of multipoles, as in the case of GD90. The effect of line broadening on the spectra of magnetic white dwarfs is also investigated.
