On of the two broad classes of models for the X-ray bursters observed in globular clusters involves instabilities in accretion flows on to collapsed objects. In some of these models the object is a moderate mass (≡10 M_sun;) black hole, and the accretion takes place from a reservoir of gas cluster centre. This paper compares this accretion with that which would occur on to the normal stellar population of a globular from such a reservoir of gas. It is found that a very small number of stars at the bottom of the velocity distribution at cluster centre can receive a surprisingly large amount of accretion. If, within the early life of a cluster, a collapsed stellar remnant is retained within the cluster, it may act as a seed object for accretion during periods when its orbit carries it into the cluster central regions. It is proposed that such an object may eventually become the type of ≡10 M_sun; black hole.
