The Space Telescope, which begins operations in 1986, will represent, in a certain way, the first qualitative improvement with respect to telescopy capabilities in the optical domain since the completion of the 200-in. Hale Telescope at Palomar Mountain in 1948. Communications to and from Space Telescope will occur through the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS). The data will be transmitted to a newly created Space Telescope Science Institute (ST Sci). The ST Sci will select observations, prepare observing plans, issue commands to the spacecraft, receive, reduce, analyze, and archive the data, and distribute it to the observers. The institute will be a first rank research institution with a staff of resident astronomers having the task to maximize the scientific return from Space Telescope. Attention is given to the telescope and the instruments, the guidance system, details regarding the ST Sci, and future research.
