IN a recent note,1 Venkatesachar and Sebaiya have repeated their measurements on the hyperfine structure of the mercury arc line λ4916 and again find a coarse octet structure as before. This contradicts the narrow quintet structure previously reported by me2 and by Hansen.3 Recently, two further reports have appeared, namely, that of Murakawa4 and of Schüler and Keyston.5 The structures given by the various observers (in cm.-1 × 10-3) are shown in the accompanying table, the central component being given the intensity 30 in all cases.
