Fourteen long slit coudespectra have been obtained across the giant H II complex NGC 604 in M 33. These spectrograms verify the existence of highly supersonic motions in the ionized gas. The complexity of the velocity field in NGC 604 appears to be a direct counterpart of its chaotic morphology. Several shells with high expansion velocities (up to 60 km/s) and layers of material approaching the observer with relative velocities of up to 100 km/s can be traced in the vicinity of the Wolf-Rayet star clusters. The dominance of gravitational motions in broadening the emission line profiles is clearly ruled out. However, the observations cannot be explained by a simple theoretical picture of expanding spherical stellar wind blown bubbles. NGC 604 shows the typical aspects of a blister-like inhomogeneous H II complex, expanding into the low density interarm medium with internal activity in the form of stellar winds superimposed. The remarkable similarities with the 30 Dor complex suggest that other, more distant and spatially unresolved, giant extragalactic H II complexes have comparable structures and internal kinematics.
