The field of the z=0.4 galaxy cluster ZwCl0024+1654 includes a more distant z=1.7 galaxy that has been gravitationally lensed into several magnified and amplified images. Reconstruction of the lensed galaxy reveals a striking ring morphology in the restframe ultraviolet, prompting the ``Pretzel Galaxy'' nickname. To determine whether this primeval galaxy candidate is a collisional byproduct, a centrally- obscured starburst galaxy, or a more normal disk system with a bar- mediated resonant ring, it is necessary to image the underlying older stellar population in the restframe optical. We propose to use Gemini North and the NIRI camera to obtain deep J and H-band images of the ZwCl0024+1653 cluster field with its lensed images of the Pretzel Galaxy. The J& H-band imaging corresponds to the restframe V& R bands. Gravitational lensing of the background galaxy yields factors of up to ~20 in angular magnification while maintaining the same surface brightness, thereby providing an unprecedented view of this remote system. Multi-color photometry of other arc systems in the field belonging to additional background sources will enable a color-redshift determination, leading to new cosmological tests. Deep IR imaging of the lensing galaxy cluster itself may reveal low surface brightness intracluster features that have hitherto gone undetected.
