The suggestion of Shapiro and Teukolsky (1983) that the peculiar features of pion condensates could provide a theoretical explanation for the glitch phenomenon is addressed. The arguments leading to this possibility are summarized and the way in which the existing data already constrain the viability of this model for the specific case of the Vela pulsar is discussed.
