Stars: Variables: Rr Lyrae
Scientific paper
Deep CCD images of a field near NGC 205 taken with the "4-shooter" on the Hale 5 m telescope have been processed to find and photometrically measure variable stars. 54 variable stars have been found, of which 30 are definitely RR Lyrae stars, 12 are slow variables, probably Miras, and a few are anomalous Cepheids, or of an uncertain type. It is not clear a priori what fraction of the RR Lyrae stars belong to NGC 205 as opposed to being M31 halo members. The distribution of mean magnitudes shows that these stars are fainter than what we would expect if they were predominantly from the M31 halo. The converse implication is that the majority of these RR Lyraes are from NGC 205, and places this galaxy about 15% (100 kpc) behind M31.
