The Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) represents the Nation's strategic plan for human exploration of the Moon and Mars. As such, it will present ever-increasing technological challenges to the space community and, in particular, to the space nuclear power group represented by the symposium. Advanced space transportation systems are essential for SEI especially for Mars. Mars transportation is discussed in two elements: Earth-launch vehicles for Earth to low-Earth orbit (LEO), and transfer vehicles for Earth orbit to Mars and return. The relative size of these two vehicles will determine the extent of on-orbit operations and assembly required. The requirements for each vehible class are discussed along with the most promising concepts to meet these requirements. Representative systems that will be needed to achieve manned exploration of Mars and their characteristics are described.
