The CO J = 1-0 and 2-1 emission was mapped, and (C-13)O J = 1-0 emission toward the prototype S star, Pi(1) Gru, was detected. These data have led to the discovery of a circumstellar envelope (CSE) consisting of a fast, bipolar outflow collimated by a dense equatorial disk inside a slow primary outflow. Pi(1) Gru thus becomes the first S-star to display such outflows, and like its C-rich counterpart, V Hya, probably represents an early phase in the evolution of AGB stars into bipolar planetary nebulae. For the slow outflow, a mass-loss rate of few x 10 exp -6 solar mass/yr, and a (C-12/C-13) abundance ratio in the range 25-50 were estimated. Comparison of a recent optical image with 50-yr-old data reveals orbital motion of the main-sequence companion of Pi(1) Gru.
