If shock waves were to develop in spiral arms, then as a shock is propagated across the disk of a galaxy the front inclination angle would grow to a maximum value, reached in the limiting Mach regime. It is this relatively stable regime that would keep the spiral pitch angle approximately constant, giving the arms the shape observed. Gas ejected from supernovae exploding in the spirals could sustain this structure.
