Flux variation time scale observations are an important possible means of invalidating the black hole, as opposed to the spinar, model for the central engine of quasars and other active galactic nuclei. The Elliot and Shapiro (1974) theory states that the maximal nucleus luminosity is given by the Eddington limit of 10 to the 38th (mass/solar mass) ergs/sec, and the minimal time scale for periodicity is given by a gravitational radius/velocity of light ratio of 0.00001 mass/solar mass sec. Both the observed time scale of variations t and the luminosity L must obey the expression 'log t is greater than log L-43', with shorter time scale variations ruling out the black hole model. It is noted that this statement is contradicted by recent developments in accretion disk theory, while much shorter periodicities remain consistent with the black hole model.
