Ground-based high energy gamma-ray astronomy has its basis in the fact that photons in the 10 to the 11th - 10 to the 14th eV range are sufficiently energetic at the point of interaction with the upper atmosphere as to cause an electromagnetic cascade, detectable by its atmospheric Cerenkov radiation, using simple light collectors. The atmospheric Cerenkov technique also finds application in the study of extensive air showers produced by ultrahigh energy cosmic rays. Further progress in this discipline requires improvements in angular resolution, for the sake of improved minimum flux sensitivities. With the development, in this decade, of more sensitive detectors at satellite gamma-ray energies, and of new experiments in neutrino astronomy, the role of the atmospheric Cerenkov technique will become even more important.
