V838 Mon erupted at the beginning of 2002 becoming an extremely luminous star with L = 10^6 Lċ. V4332 Sgr experienced an outburst in 1994 whose observational characteristics resemble those of the eruption of V838 Mon. Among various scenarios proposed to explain the nature of these outbursts, the most promising is a stellar merger event. In this contribution we investigate the observational properties of central objects and their surroundings in the post outburst phase. We concentrate on molecular bands of TiO, VO, AlO, ScO, YO, and CrO (seen for the first time in V4332 Sgr) identified in their spectra: in absorption in V838 Mon, and in emission in V4332 Sgr. Combination of high column density and low, 300 - 500 K, excitation temperature in the outflow from V838 Mon is responsible for saturation of the TiO bands absorbing from the ground level. Simultaneously, it allows to identify fine details of molecular bands earlier unobserved, e.g. forbidden transitions of TiO. The main object in V4332 Sgr is surrounded by a circumstellar disc, which is seen almost edge-on so the central star is obscured. The geometry of the system explains the presence of strong molecular emission bands excited through radiative pumping of the gas of kinetic temperature as low as 120 K. From the synthesis of molecular bands we derive relative abundances of molecular species. We report enhanced abundance of AlO in V838 Mon similar to that irregularly appearing in spectra of Miras. Finally, we discuss chemical pathways to observed variety of metal oxides.
