A description is presented of developments related to the Case for Mars II conference. In connection with this conference, a multidisciplinary collection of space experts met in Boulder, CO, in July 1984. Following in the footsteps of the first Case for Mars symposium in 1981, this year's program had the purpose to synthesize a blueprint for human Mars missions leading to a continued presence on the planet's surface. It is found that, in terms of technologies and spacecraft design, the basis for going to Mars is already available, and no breakthroughs are needed. There are, however, certain physiological problems related to the effects of long periods of weightlessness on Mars-bound crews. Attention is given to U.S. human planetary missions for the next century, U.S. missions which could be conducted at the end of the century, U.S. missions to the two satellites of Mars, and the travel of Soviet cosmonauts to Mars and Phobos in the 1990's.
