The galactic electron density n(e) is studied by assuming that the spatial distribution of pulsars deduced from their dispersion measures is cylindrically symmetric about the galactic center. A selected subsample of pulsars detected by the II Molonglo Survey is used to test a number of simple models, including a uniform electron density model, an exponential model, and a model where the electron density varies with galactic radius. It is found that the effective mean n(e) for the whole galaxy is 0.037 +0.020 or -0.012 per cubic cm, that the scale height of electrons is greater than 300 pc and probably about 1 kpc or more, and that there is little evidence for variation of n(e) with galactic radius for radius greater than about 5 kpc. A detailed analysis of the contribution to n(e) from H II regions is made, and a model for n(e) is proposed.
